Hi everyone!
We are excited for another summer of ministry in Western Kenya and want to give an update on how God has been at work through SOUL recently! Since purchasing our new ministry vehicle earlier this year our team has been rescuing more children from homelessness than ever before despite the continued COVID-19 restrictions in Kenya. This year our ministry has already rescued 12 children from homelessness! Each child has their own unique redemption story of how God has impacted their lives through SOUL. We want to share a couple of stories of the recently rescued children.
The first child pictured is a 10 year old girl named Gertrude. Gertrude ran away from her home in attempt to find her father who had left her with her step mother. Once she arrived in the city of Busia Gertrude was unable to locate her father and was forced to sleep on the city streets. One thing our staff knows is the importance of identifying and rescuing homeless street girls as soon as possible due to the high risk of rape and human trafficking. Fortunately for Gertrude, our amazing staff was able to quickly locate her and reunite her with her family by tracing her school name.
The next pictures are of sisters, Pauline and Joram. After not being able to go to school due to COVID-19, these two girls attempted to cross the border from Kenya to Uganda to locate their relatives. After crossing the border late in the afternoon they realized they did not have enough money for a bus which resulted in them wandering the city streets alone together. We praise God for a local shop owner who reached out to our team allowing them to quickly rescue these two sisters and return them to their family.
Our ministry has four main components that help us operate effectively and promote change in the community: Outreach, Rescue, Follow-Up, and Prevention. We begin by reaching out to the children on the streets. After children have been rescued and are placed in stable housing our team follows up with them regularly based on their need and the amount of time they have been at home. Prevention is our ministry’s effort to prevent child homelessness before it starts. We do this by going into local schools and educating the students and teachers at those schools. Additionally, we train shop owners, police, and citizens in the community by educating them and providing them with the necessary tools to identify and report vulnerable children, child trafficking, child labor, and child abuse and neglect.
It is always so encouraging to see our prevention program in action. Because the shop owner was educated she was able to identify Pauline and her Joram as vulnerable and contact our ministry to help them. These are stories of just three recently rescued children. We praise God that there are over 150 stories just like these, each showing God’s amazing love for his children. We thank each and every person for their continued prayers and support and we are looking forward to all God is going to do this summer!
